Job Procedure Upon Detecting a Chlorine Leak at the Pump Stations

STEPS

 

1.         Call for one of the other personnel On Call to help you. 

2.         Wear A Self Contained Breathing Apparatus if it is necessary to enter the chlorine room. 

3.         Determine the location of the leak. 

4.         If it is possible to isolate the leak by turning off the tank valve, do so, and call the Certified Utility Operators with Public Works. 

5.         If the tank or tank valve are leaking, the leak cannot be stopped by closing the tank valve.  If this is the case, do the following:

                If possible, roll the tonner so that gas, not liquid is leaking.

Remember that chlorine gas will drift downwind and down hill.

                Keep pedestrians away from the site and upwind.

                Remember that adding water to chlorine creates acid; Don=t hose down the leak, as that will make the situation worse. 

6.         Call STANCHEM at 1-403-424-1754, a Quick Response Team will be sent to assist.  Be prepared to give them the following information:

                  Wind direction

                  Wind velocity

                 Weather information, rain, snow, fog.... 

7.         Call Director of Disaster Services
