Permanent Crosswalks

This policy shall set out the standard of crosswalk marking and locations to be marked within the Town of Lacombe.

The purpose of the policy is to standardize crosswalk markings and locations hereby 8increasing driver awareness and public safety.

Painted crosswalks - crosswalk marked on the pavement by physically spray painting the insignia on the asphalt.

Permanent crosswalks - crosswalk routered into the pavement surface and poured with white plastic.

A schedule of installing permanent crosswalk markings shall be put into effect in 1991.  This shall be attached as Schedule "B".  As the program is implemented all crosswalks which are not done as permanent crosswalks shall be painted crosswalks.  The crosswalks shall be placed according to Schedule "A" also attached.  As a general rule all arterial or collector streets shall have at least one crossing marked as a permanent crosswalk.

The crosswalk program should be scheduled prior to June 15 of each year.

Permanent crosswalks shall be done by private contractor.  Painted crosswalks shall be done by Town forces.  Standard crosswalks shall be painted using 8" parallel bars with 4" cross hatching at 5' spacing.

The scheduling of the transition to permanent crosswalks shall take place as follows:

  • 1991 - Main Crossings on 50 Avenue
  • 1992 - Elementary School Area
  • 1993 - Remainder of School Area
  • 1994 - Parallel crosswalks along 50 Avenue
  • 1995 - 51 Avenue Area
  • 1996 - 58 Street North of 50 Avenue and 50 Street
  • 1997 - 58 Street South of 50 Avenue and C & E Trail South of 50 Avenue
  • 1998 - C & E Trail North of 50 Avenue and additions
  • 1999 - Same program as 1991 and so on
  • Eleven crosswalks per year shall be undertaken
