Athlete of the Year

Annual awards to honour one local Female Athlete and one local Male Athlete who have contributed or excelled in sport in part or in all of the following areas:

 

1.    Actively involved as a participant for a length of time.

2.    Has contributed to the further development of sport in the community and district.

3.    Has achieved a level of excellence in a particular sport.

4.    Has received provincial or national recognition in a particular sport.

5.    Is an example for others to follow.

6.    Is an individual dedicated to and genuinely interested in sport.

7.    Accepts winning or defeat in the proper perspective.

8.    Has respect for opponents.

9.    Plays the game for the game's sake.

10.   Encourages positive rather than the negative aspects of sport.

 

QUALIFYING INDIVIDUALS

Local male and female athletes involved in school athletics, local sports organizations, individual sports, college/university athletics.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

The Leadership Development Committee of the Lacombe and District Recreation, Parks and Culture Board will review the applications and submit a recommendation to the Board based on the following criteria:

 

1.    How long the nominee has been involved in the sport in a significant way.

2.    How rigorous the nominee’s training/competition program is.

3.    What competitive accomplishments the nominee has achieved (regional, provincial, national, international level).

4.    What way(s) the contributions/accomplishments made by the nominee have been an inspiration to the  field of sport.

5.    What contribution the nominee has made to encourage and/or enhance fair play, sportsmanship and a positive attitude.

 

RECIPIENT SELECTION

The recipient(s)  of the award will be those forwarded to the Lacombe and District Recreation, Parks and Culture Board by the Leadership Development Committee for final approval by the Board.

 

AWARD PRESENTATION

 

The award(s) will be presented annually at the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce banquet by the Chairman of the Lacombe Recreation, Parks and Culture Board or designate.   Nominators may be asked to provide background information on the individual as part of the presentation.
