As noted, the first Open House was held near the beginning of the project on April 24th, 2002. Approximately 20 people attended the Open House which provided information on the nature of the project and on existing conditions and traffic counts. Attendees were provided with forms to record their comments on the information presented, and to highlight issues that they wished to see considered as part of the study process.
In general, the people that commented on the information presented at the Open House confirmed their desire to see a transportation study that dealt with the existing issues (the emerging issues noted earlier) and as well, sought to map out the Town in a manner that would allow it to maintain a reasonable degree of mobility. People also identified a desire to see regional issues addressed within the context of the study, such as a south by-pass for truck traffic (and other through traffic) so as to limit the need to widen Highway 12 in the future.
Comment forms were collected, and several additional emerging issues were identified, including the following:
· Traffic volume congestion and safety issues on 50th Street in front of the school sites between 54th Avenue and Woodland Drive.
· Site distance and safety issues on Woodland Drive.
· Intersection congestion and pedestrian safety at the 58th Street/56th Avenue intersection.
· Intersection safety at the Highway 12/Highway 2A intersection and corresponding railway crossing.
These issues were therefore added to the list of emerging issues identified in the original call for proposals.
