4.3.2.2  Warning Signs

Wolf Creek Drive (Photo 24)

This truck bypass road has a series of warning signs for southbound traffic that is destined to Highway 12.  The Stop Ahead Sign (WB-1) is located about 500m north of the stop location.  This is too far away.  The Stop Ahead is followed by; a Railway Crossing Sign (WA-18), route marker signs, and a Curve Sign (WA-3).  The three signs are spaced about 100m apart, however, it would appear that the distance between the route marker signs and the curve warning signs is about 15m.  Between the curve sign and the railway tracks is about 150m+.  In general, there is a need to relocate the signs such that the signs are about 50m apart, starting at about 75m north of the railway tracks.

Recommendation: Relocate the signs so that they are placed nearer the applicable hazard.

The Checkerboard Sign (WA-8) is located away from the junction of the two roads.

Recommendation: Relocate the sign further to the south to be near the end of the intersecting road.

The Lane Ends Sign (WA-33R) indicates a reduction in the number of lanes from three to two.  The actual physical conditions are that the lanes change from two to one lane.

Recommendation: Replace the warning sign with the standard WA-33R (two lanes to one)

The Railway Crossing Ahead Sign (WA-18) is of a non-standard shape.  There is also a problem of minimum spacing between the highway and the railway tracks, and insufficient warning is given to motorists.  It would be better to place a warning sign on the highway, both north and south of the intersection.  The new MUTCD has a special sign for this application.

Recommendation: Replace the existing sign with a WA-19 sign, both L and R.

The “Icy Patches” is a warning sign, but the shape is non-standard.  There is no specific sign in the MUTCD that is similar to this message.  There are slippery when wet, and bridge ices signs.  The likely compromise is to switch to diamond shape sign with a word message.

Recommendation: Replace the sign with a word message diamond shaped warning sign.

For eastbound traffic, there is a Divided Highway Ends Sign (WA-32) followed by an apparent roadway widens sign.  The actual road condition is that it is narrowing.  Perhaps the second sign was installed upside-down..

Recommendation: Reorient the Road Narrows Sign (WA-33)
