6.5  Calculations

The analysis is based on either manual or computer modeling showing the future design of the adjacent road/rail way. Traffic volume designs are to include a projected 10 year period for the adjacent road way, and a 20 year projected traffic volume for adjacent truck routes.

There are three primary approved methods of calculation DNLs, including the following:

·        Alberta Surface Transportation Noise & Attenuation Study (Manual Calculations)

·        Canadian Mortgage & Housing Corporation, “Road and Rail Noises: Effects on Housing” (Manual Calculations)

·        FHWA Traffic Noise Modeling Program (Computer Program)

Of these, the FHWA methodology is recommended for implementation by the Town, though the Town may choose to accept from developers, any of these three methodologies. Note that in all case, copies of the Potential Traffic Noise Data Sheet are to be submitted to the Town for approval as part of the process.
