The loss
of the 187 on-street parking stalls on Highway 12 will not have a major impact
on parking availability in the downtown. Of these 187 stalls, only 34 are
located in front of existing businesses in the core, with a further 13 located
in front of the existing fire hall. The remaining 140 stalls are located in
front of the existing residences between the core and 58th Street,
and all of those residences have rear access via a laneway.
With
potential future development in the downtown at the 20,000 population level the
loss of Highway 12 on-street parking would reduce the number of parking stalls
which could be lost to redevelopment to approximately 450.
Potential
exists to limit parking on Highway 12 only during peak periods. While this will
increase the parking supply during off peak periods it will also require daily
enforcement and towing during peak periods.
