Lacombe Handivan is a joint venture between Lacombe & District F.C.S.S., Neighborhood Place and the Town of Lacombe. We provide accessible transportation for persons who cannot take or afford other forms of transportation. Our vehicle is adapted to the needs of people requiring assistance. Handivan is a shared-ride system, which means that other passengers will be picked up and dropped off enroute to your destination.

Bookings

When making a reservation, the following information will be required:

1. Your name, address & telephone.

2. The exact address where you wish to be pickup up and dropped off.

3. Date and appointment time.

4. Return Time.

5. Mobility aid (wheelchair, scooter, walker).

6. Will an attendant be travelling with you?

Passengers are requested to book at least 24 hours in advance. Availability may be limited due to ongoing contracts for service. If you have some flexibility with your time of travel, we can probably accommodate your needs. We can take bookings up to two months in advance. Cancellation of bookings must be made three hours prior to pick up or a one way fee may be charged. Overnight cancellations can be left on the answering machine (872-1552).

Eligibility

Any person who cannot access conventional forms of transportation with dignity because of age, cost, disability or mobility impairment is eligible to ride the Handivan.

We provide service for:

• Medical appointments

• Grocery shopping

• Banking

• Access to community resources:

  • Education

  • Employment services

  • Childcare

  • Social, recreation activities

Attendants and Companions

One attendant may accompany you (the rider) at no cost if you require assistance. Prior notice must be given with booking. Attendants will be expected to provide assistance with their designated passenger. Additional companions may ride at the regular fee but only if space is available. If you require an attendant for large amount of groceries, please phone the Volunteer Coordinator at 786-0110 to arrange for volunteer help. Handivan reserves the right to require an attendant to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.

Points to Remember

• Be ready 10 minutes before your pick-up.

• Drivers will wait for a total of five minutes for riders to appear for their trip. Delays affect the next pick-up.

• Dress appropriately for the weather. Breakdowns and delays can happen.

• All passengers must wear seatbelts, unless medically excused.

• Book at least 24 hours in advance to help us maximize our resources. When making a booking, please inform us of all stops that you intend to make.

• Same day bookings are handled on a space available basis (no guarantee).

• Sidewalks must be clear to get you to the bus safely. Drivers have discretion to decide if your path or stairs are in an unsafe condition.

• The driver may assist you to and from accessible building entrances on each end of the trip.

• Drivers are not responsible for carrying your groceries for you so make sure you arrange for assistance if you require it.

• We are open to suggestions and comments.
