NATURAL SPACES MANAGEMENT PLAN This plan was adopted by Council on March 25, 2002. Consequential amendments to a number of the statutory land use plans was required and these have been now been passed as well. Photos by Doris Thesenvitz In the fall of 2000 Town Council established and appointed members to the Natural Spaces Management Plan Steering Committee. The mandate of the committee is to develop a plan and program for the long term management of natural spaces within the Town of Lacombe. The Natural Spaces Management Plan steering committee was established as result of a proposal presented to Town Council in June, 2000 by the Lacombe Natural Areas and Green Space (NAGS) committee that proposed a program of natural space evaluation, providing a consistent approach for urban development decision-making that integrates the preservation of prioritized natural habit. NAGS is a subcommittee of the Building Lacombe for Tomorrow Committee. In June of 1999 at the community breakfast hosted by the Building Lacombe for Tomorrow Committee, the number one priority for the community was “preserve, expand and enhance Lacombe’s natural areas, green spaces, parks and (hiking/biking) trails. Stantec Consulting Ltd was contracted to conduct a ecological profile and habitat inventory of the natural area in Lacombe. Field studies were conducted June 5 through to June 15. Based on the data collected by the scientists the consultant in conjunction with the Steering Committee have developed recommendations to Town Council for policy development in that will address the desire to protect natural areas in an environment of rapid growth. The committee is composed of various stakeholders concerned about future development in a fast growing community and preservation of the natural areas within the boundaries of Lacombe.
