Mandate

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is a partnership between the Town of Lacombe and the Board of FCSS. The program is intended to:

Promote Volunteerrism

Be preventive in order to:

a) enhance, strengthen and stabilize family life and community life.

b) improve people's ability to identify and act on their own needs.

c) help avert family or community social breakdown.

d) help prevent small problems from turning into crises that require major intervention.

e) provide citizens with information about its planning and operation.

f) provide co-operation & co-ordination with other service agencies in the community.

Family and Community Support Services has existed in Lacombe since 1969. At present the program provides services to the Town of Lacombe and is governed by a volunteer board.

The Programs

Seniors Program

Home Support

Home Support is a program which aims to maintain, strengthen and improve home and family life of the elderly, those recently discharged from the hospital, the chronically ill or disabled, as well as single parent families. Fees for service are based on a sliding fee scale.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a program designed to provide a hot meal to the frail elderly, those recently discharged from the hospital and the chronically ill. This service is available Monday through Friday for a fee which covers the cost of the meal.

Seniors Information

This program assists people in the following ways:

Helping people prepare for their retirement by assisting with their applications for government pensions.

Providing updated information about the programs available to seniors and assisting seniors in accessing these services by answering questions, filling out forms, and communicating with other government agencies.

Providing information, self-help kits and other resources about guardianship.

Assisting seniors and the disabled with simple income tax returns and Guaranteed Income Supplement forms.

Volunteer Centre

The Volunteer Centre serves as an information source on volunteer jobs available in the community. This service links potential volunteers and volunteer opportunities. The Centre develops a registry of volunteers as to their skills, experience and interests and refers them to agencies, organizations or seniors who require volunteers. FCSS works in conjunction with community groups, agencies and individuals to promote voluntarism.

Youth Programs

FCSS is involved in a number of Youth initiatives including the Hire-a-Student program. Additional involvement in youth programs occur as the need arises.

Community Development

This program is designed to respond to issues that affect family and community life in Lacombe. This is realized through various services including:

a) Community/Family Life Education Courses. Developed in response to local needs and requests.

b) Conferences and Workshops also developed in response to community needs and requests.

c) Lacombe and District Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Funding is provided to assist in the provision of services to children of single parent families.

d) Christmas Food Certificate Fund (CFCF). FCSS sponsors this program which provides food vouchers for families experiencing financial difficulties during the Christmas season. Donations and applications to CFCF are accepted at the FCSS office. Referrals to Santa's Anonymous are also made through the FCSS office.

e) Referral and Information. FCSS will provide contact names and numbers of other services available in the area, including phone numbers for the foodbank, counselling services and other agencies.

f) Community Liaison . FCSS liaisons with many organizations and agencies locally to ensure that FCSS is aware of what other organizations are doing. Active participation with Lacombe Network and County of Lacombe Lifelong Learning Association ensure that networking opportunities are maximized.

g) Community Computer. FCSS has a computer available to non-profit groups for use. This computer is also available to individuals developing their resume.

h) Equipment Bookings. FCSS may have equipment available for non-profit groups to use.

i) Other Projects. The FCSS Board and Staff are consistently monitoring the community to address needs as they arise. FCSS is involved in many projects including development of and restructuring of Children's Services, Caring for Children, Collective Kitchens, Coats for Kids, Tools for Schools, Mitten Tree, Building Lacombe for Tomorrow and ACE Grant.
